Unit 22 - Single Camera Formats

Formats

Series

A collection of series that have different episodes each week with new problems. An example of this type of format is American horror story. However, this show uses an anthology series where different episodes have a different set of story and characters in each season.  Because of this format you don't have to watch season 1 of the show to understand what is happening as the next season is different even if the actors/actresses are the same they play different characters.

For example, in American horror story each season has their own name. Season 3 was the coven and season 5 is the hotel. Not only does the series change but there is also a pattern each theme. Each theme for American horror story are these weird, unnatural occurrences that happen.

This benefits of using this is its more entertaining for the audience as it doesn't get boring. There is always a different theme and we never know what to expect which keeps the audience and gets more people to watch the show. Its unique as most TV shows are the same throughout the series but this show is different.

Serial

This is when each episode picks up the narrative from where they left off. For example, a serial will most likely leave you on a cliffhanger until the next episode.  An example, of this is the 100. This TV show uses serial and is very good at leaving the audience wanting more. Unlike a series the 100 does not have different problems each episode. This TV show would spend a whole season with the same problem until the end of the show where they finally overcome it. Using this on an episode makes the audience eager to know more and makes them intrigued. This is because they are left on a cliffhanger which would make them annoyed but excited for the next episode. This would also cause a social interaction as people can talk to their friends about the show or even use social media to talk about what happened in the episode.

This is also lets us grow with the characters. As using serials lets us watch our favourite characters develop. An example, of this is Octavia. From the beginning of season 1 of the 100 we see her as this delicate, stubborn girl who chased butterflies. But as the TV show progressed she changed into this hardcore killer. Using this serial allowed us to progress with her and see the changes she went through.

One-offs

This is when a show is only shown once. It does not have any episodes afterwards as it just has a beginning, middle and end. For example, channel showed a one-ff tv show, called the unloved. It is about a eleven year old girl growing up in a foster home in the UK. This type of tv format however, is also good as its just a mini episodes that just gives the audience some entertainment.

Which do I prefer?

The TV format I prefer is serial. Even though waiting for a new episode feels like a long time I would prefer serial because it excites me. I am so in to what will happen next that I would go on social media and share with everyone and even go onto the websites of the people, this is because I get all worked up wondering what will happen next. Episodes like a series where everything is done in one episodes can be boring and not as much entertaining because even if you get a few shocks its not as fun because the problem is solved in one episode whereas, with serial it takes time and you just help get caught in its web because you want to know what happens next and the audience is just getting crazy in anticipation.

Unit 1 - A2 - Production log 2

Production logs

Since my first production log a lot of things have progressed. For example, me and my group have started to film, we have done makeup, got somewhere with our filming and everything is going well. We have been focusing on what camera shots to use, what music we will be using in the background. We have even began editing, which is making us closer to finishing our movie. My group have come a long way and have improved. However, there are some bad parts as sometimes when we need to film not everyone is available at the same time or are too busy with school so it makes it harder of trying to film since everyone has different times, but we have got through it and finally found days which everyone is free at. Although not everyone is free we have had a lot filming on days when everyone is free. We have even used makeup to make a black eye which occurs in the film to look believable.

Unit 1 - Production logs

Production logs

Today me and my group were looking for a location on where to film and we have found one. We will be shooting our film in a hostile since one of the actresses lives there and we thought it would be a perfect place to shoot our horror film as it has this scary affects we can use that would make it look creepy. We also will have our own room ands and hallway which will be convenient to use as we can these in film, which will help us out. Because other people live here we had to ask for permission from the people at the front desk. We were lucky they said yes and we were very happy as we were able to find a place that suited everybody. We then started of our production schedule and had started on times and dates for when we will meet up and when other people are busy. This was the only downfall as a lot of people have fourth period most days and afterwards are very tired. It doesn't help that the location isn't close to the school, so we had minimal days on when to film. Furthermore, we also have a actor who doesn't go to our school and they live quite far, which made the production schedule more difficult. However, after some  planning we were able to come up with times and dates that suited everybody.

Unit 1 - A2 - Risk Assessment

Risk assessment form

Having a risk assessment is vital to my group before and during film because this will help us to become aware of our surroundings when filming. This is why we made a risk assessment as it could prevent these hazards from occurring.

Hazards
Risk rating (High, medium, low)
Controls
Trash
Medium
Because we will be filming at a public location people’s trash will be laying around. We need to be careful because if we don’t we could trip or even slip on someone’s trash making me or someone from my group hurt themselves.
Phones
Low
Before filming we have to make sure everyone’s phone are off as they can be very distracting cause us to waste time on filming. My group should put their phones in their bags and only use it for an important call or unless we are using the phone in our play.
Personnel belongings being kept safe and out of the way
Medium
When filming we need to make sure our bags are out of the way unless being used. We could easily trip.
Risk of actors/actresses falling on slippery surfaces
Medium
Because sometimes people did not clean up after themselves at the location we were at, we had to look around to see if the floor was clean
Risk of disturbance from members of the public
Low
Go to somewhere quiet so people won't disturb us and we won't disturb them.
Risk of traffic that is not part of the production causing noise
Low
Find a spot that is far from traffic so when filming it doesn’t interfere with our recording, unless needed.

Unit 1 - A2 - Weekly productions logs

Week 1 of production logs

Week 1 - 08/12/15

For our first weekly log me and my group started of by finishing off our paperwork by going through what we need and what we already have for when it comes to filming. For example, we gave out our release forms to those who will be starring in our film, we bought the costumes needed and have made a clereance for the location we will be filming in. During this time we have set up a meeting schudele so we know what days and times to come in and have made sure nobody is busy on these days. Furthemore, we also made our job rules so when filming people know what their job role is. For example, i play one of the actresses for the movie and am also the makeup artist. My partner Anastasia is the editor and camerawoman. This was easier and good to do so when it comes to the day we all know what each of us are doing so we aren't confused and wasting time. We also made a call sheet to keep us up to date. This made things easier and more organised as everything for each scene and location were already written down. However, even though we have made a lot of progress we still haven't bought any of the props needed. For example, we need some scary masks, and some tick tacks to be our drugs. We need the masks and the fake drugs as they are essential to our film.

Unit 1 - A1 - Legal Issues & Regulations

Legal issues

The advertising standard authority (ASA) - Is the UK's protector responsible for ensuring ads are legal, honest, truthful and decent. The role of the ASA is to respond to complaints they get about advertisement and take action on taking it away. They also check the media for harmful or miss leading ads that people wouldn't find appropriate watching on TV. For example, Sainsburys had done a advert with The Royal British Legionthat was banned due to complaints they had received. They showed an ad based on the 1914 Christmas day truce during the first world war. Most of the complainants objected to the use of an event from the First World War to advertise a supermarket.  While acknowledging that some found the ad to be in poor taste. It was not judged to be offensive but the ad had received 823 complaints so the ASA had no choice but to take it down.

The British board of film classification (BBFC) - This is the age regulator on film and video. This is when examiners will have a private screening and will talk about what age rating the movie should be. Before the examiners pick an age range they have to consider 6 things. Does it have sex? nudity?, is it violent? is there a lot of swearing? is it scary? and does it have any sexual violence? . These are all what they consider before putting an age range on a movie. Examiners choose from U to PG, 12A, 15 and 18; However, the BBFC isn't just about examiners as not many people know this but the BBFC is usually based on the audience's opinion. They would usually show people videos and ask what they think the age range is. There are examiners but the examiners would ask what people think about the movie to double check so when a movie goes into a cinema the age range is right, as there can be conflicts about an range. For example, the movie Adulthood was rated a 15 due to use of violence with guns, knifes and bats, sex and nudity and also drugs. The BBFC believed that it would be suitable for 15 year olds because anyone younger shouldn't be allowed.

However, there have been times when the BBFC have changed their ratings due to the audience not thinking its appropriate for their children. For example, dawn of the dead was rated at 15 however, the BBFC changed it to 18 as it could scare kids younger.

Office of communication (OFCOM) - This is the communications regulator in the UK. They regulate TV and radio sectors fixed line telecoms and other wireless devices. OFCOM was made to ensure that people get the best communication services while getting protected from scams. For example, if people are watching TV or listening to the radio OFCOM make sure people are protected from harmful of offensive material.

Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph and Theatre Union (BECTU) - It is the media's and entertainment trade union. It's the UK's media and entertainment trade union; sectors covered include broadcasting, film, independent production, theatre and the arts, leisure and digital media. It represents staff, contact and freelance workers who are based in the United Kingdom. It is committed to equality for all people at work. The union supports policies that encourage and support cultural diversity and respect. For example, the unions equality and diversity committee is to support unions efforts to support more women to participate in fully in developing policies and initiatives.
Before putting your film out to members of the public you must first make sure you have clearance. This means you have written permission to show everything that will appear on screen. Such as, script , brands logos and music. For example,if a person were to do a movie based on a true film and they did not have clearance from the person then those people would be in a lot trouble as they done something without a persons permission. Another issue is copyright. This is when a film or TV shows uses something that someone else has already used.

When doing my short film I will also have to think about copyright and clearances. For example, getting clearances for the stuff we may wear. If someone from my group were to have a trainers that are from Adidas we would have to get clearance from them so we can use. Also our location we would need clearance otherwise we would be in trouble for not asking permission.  We would also need to look up other short films from the internet and from others as somebody may have already have a similar idea and we wouldn't want people to think we have copied their work,

Unit 1 - Production logs

Production logs

Today me and my group our going for a rerun as we decided to change some scenes as we wanted to change some things that were shot. We didn't like what we shot so decided to go back to the hostile we were filming at to make the scenes better and to also add some new ones. It went very well as everybody had cooperated good. There was no arguments or anyone not wanting to work with a specific person. However, we did have problems when filming as there was always people coming into our film that we did not need which made film more time consuming as we had to keep on re-filming a specific scene. There was also noise of chatter or somebody shouting and even some people play fighting. But we were able to work through it and had filmed some very good scenes for our film. We have decided to meet next week for a final film as we have everything we need.

Unit 1 - A2 - Productions logs

Production log

Today me and my group have finished filming. We have done all our editing, uploaded the video to Youtube and have added sounds and music. Our short film has come a long and is at a very good standard. All the cast who played have done well and we have made it scary. However, we have made some major changes to our film as some things did not work. Our location has changed but things have worked up well. Even though my group have made a lot of progressed and we have finished filming it did take some time. As said before everyone schedules weren't the same so meeting up made it a bit difficult, but we have been able to manage. Overall even tough sometimes we have struggled we have come a long way and have finished everything. Everyone worked well with each other, we all knew who was doing what and there was no conflict between everyone.

Unit 22 - Pitch evaluation

Pitch evaluation

Working title

Strengths

When pitching to the glass we were clear and concise when talking about our short film. We were detailed about what props we will use, where our location is and what type of equipment and camera angles we will use. Another strength we had was when coming up with ideas was to doing our own jobs. For example, I was in charge with coming up with the themes, what the plot is about and what props we would be using. Anastasia job was that she came up with movies that inspired us for this type of short film, where we would be filming and the equipment we would be using. This was good because we had a small group but we were able to take on some roles for each of us so we weren't wasting time.

Another strength we had in our group was how well we worked together. There weren't any arguments which made it easier and quicker to complete our work. We also listened to each others ideas and told the other what we thought about something whether it was a bad or good. We also always improved the other ideas. For example, Anastasia came up with the idea of using ecstasy as drug that the two friends take, and I improved her idea by saying we should use the white tick tacks as our drugs so it can look real to the audience watching.

Finally, another strength my group had was both me and my group member had a say in everything when pitching. For example, we choose power points we had a lot to say on so when presenting we didn't stutter.

Weakness

During our pitch when we were presenting to the class my weakness were that I was slouching. I was siting on the table while talking which wouldn't really get people's attention when presenting. I needed to be more confident and stop fiddling with my hands. We also needed to add some more slides about what we would be using. For example, we never spoke about what type of sound we will use, when will we use it and what scene to use it for. This an important aspect to our short film which we never mentioned because without sound our horror wouldn't be as scaring.

Another weakness we faced was it took long for us to come up with an idea and spent most of our time trying to figure out what we wanted to do. Our title is something we are still working on and who will be cast as well. Another weakness my group faced was that not everyone participated in the coming up with a plot and not everyone was here when coming up with ideas. This made us struggle as a group because not everyone was there to contribute.

Another weakness we faced was when presenting our pitch to the class we were rushing ourselves as we wanted to get the presentation over with. We didn't go through our slide in detail. For an improvement next time we need to be more confident and explain our work better when presenting. Lastly a weakness of ours was we didn't talk about the movie much. For example, the plot which could've confused the audience what the short film is about due to confusing ending we have.

Unit 1 - A2 - Storyboards

 Stroyboards

Before me and my group started our filming we made stroyboards so we have an idea of what we want to do for each scene, what music and what camera shots we will be using.
